Greene County high school and middle school sports teams have wrapped up their first full year together and Activities Director Dave Waskow told Raccoon Valley Radio Network he felt it was a great year. The 2012 softball Rams had players from East Greene, Jefferson-Scranton, and Paton-Churdan school districts on it, but the 2012-13 school year was the first for all sports to play under the moniker Greene County. It was also the first academic year where EG and J-S students went to school together all day…P-C students attended school in Jefferson part of the day and the Rockets fielded their own teams in cross-country, volleyball, basketball, and track & field. The other sports were eligible to have students from all three school districts in Greene County on the same team.

Coach Waskow said, “I thought it was a great year. Sure, there were some ups and downs, but the kids got along great and I really think it was successful.” He sited a baseball game in Jefferson this summer vs. Gilbert where a Gilbert parent told him she was really surprised to learn athletes from three different school districts were on the field at the same time because they got along so well and she wouldn’t have known that if she hadn’t been told.

The Rams won Heart of Iowa Activities Conference team championships in 2012-13 by themselves in dual meet wrestling and conference tournament wrestling as well as being tri-champions of the conference in softball. Wrestling and softball are sports where students residing in all three county school districts were on the same team.

Coach Waskow is retiring early and moving to NE Iowa for family reasons. His last official day as Activities Director here is July 31.
