photo (58)The Perry Community School District Board of Education held their regular monthly meeting last night.

At the meeting Barry Bengston presented a summary of coverage and premiums for the district’s insurance programs.  Insurance is provided through the Employers Mutual Insurance Company out of Des Moines, which is through the Iowa Association of School Board’s Safety Group Insurance Program. There was a 10 percent increase overall, with the exception of the Workman’s Comp portion which was a 19 percent increase this year, which is considered average in the State of Iowa.

Next Technology Director Rich Nichols introduced the student interns who have worked with him to troubleshoot computer problems and help rollout 1-to-1 laptop program that begins this fall.  The new program students to help out for credit during the school year and earn money during the summer.  Nichols then gave the board an update on the laptop rollout process.  A group of around 100 students from the high school National Honor Society, Bluejay Congress and technology interns will all receive their computers the week after Labor Day and use them in the school settings to get a feel for how everything works, followed by holding a follow-up meeting with those students and their parents before everyone in grades 7-12 gets their laptop in October. Nichols then shared information with the board in regards to classroom security, computer support and control with the laptops.

Superintendent Lynn Ubben then shared information from the recent School Administrators of Iowa legislative executive meeting she attended.  She said many of the legislative priorities expressed at the meeting match those important to the Perry School District.

The board then approved a food service agreement between the district and Perry Child Development Center at a rate of $2.95 per enrolled student participant served lunch.  A universal preschool 28E agreement was then approved between the district, St. Patrick’s, New Opportunities and Perry Area Child Development Center.  Revisions to board policies in regards to appropriate internet use were then approved, along with minor changes to the school handbooks to include guidelines for the laptop program.

A School Budget Review Committee allowable growth request was then approved to protect the district in case adjustments are made forcing a negative balance.  Hy-Vee was then approved as the district’s produce vendor for the fruit and vegetable grant and personnel changes were approved, including the hiring of three elementary school teachers and four support staff.
