Veteran Ram football coach Kevin Paulsen visited with Raccoon Valley Radio prior to Thursday’s Media Day in Jefferson. Among the questions asked of the offensive coordinator/wide receivers/defensive backs coach was one involving the athletic potential of the 2013 Greene County team. “I would say we have more athletic depth not only at the skill positions, but in the line positions as well. I think those kids worked hard this summer to improve themselves as well. I heard Coach (Paul) Rhoads talk at their Media Day and one of things he said was, ‘I’d rather be young and athletic than just young.’ and that’s definitely the case with us. We’re going to have some young kids that are going to have to play due to smaller classes above them, but they’re also athletic and willing to learn.”

The Rams were 4-6 in 2013 and finished third among seven teams in the southwest Iowa Class 2A district, which they will be in again this fall. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) is tabbed as the clear favorite in the district after having won the past two titles and return an outstanding senior class, but after that the other three playoff spots from the district could be wide open.

Greene County opens the season in Perry vs. the Blue Jays on Friday, Aug. 30 in non-district action. The 7:30 p.m. contest is a renewal of the Annual Battle of the Cowbell and will be broadcast on KDLS 1310 AM and KGRA 98.9 FM.
