ADMIn its first action of the season last Friday night, the ADM football team impressed fans and coaches alike during its scrimmage against Norwalk.

In front of a couple hundred ADM faithful who made the trek from Adel to Norwalk, the Tigers look good both offensively and defensively, and offensive coordinator Steve Stanley says it felt great to be back on the football field.

“They were able to knock the cobwebs off a little bit and we could see a lot from the younger kids who was going to be able to step up and play, and we were really surprised with that we saw.  So it was good.  It’s good to get back out here and actually get that competition against another team and start to get hitting so it’s fun.  ”

The scrimmage wasn’t scored as the two teams exchanged 20-minute periods with and without the ball.

First-year starting quarterback Colby Whisner played well in his first varsity action under center.  The senior completed 8 of his 13 throws, one of which went for a touchdown.  Whisner added a running touch as well.

Stanley was impressed by his new quarterback’s performance, particularly on the touchdown run.

“He did the little things that we asked.  Tonight I told him, ‘it was going to be basic, you need to see your reads’.  The play down on the endzone we ran a bootleg, he has two options on that right now, later in the progression of the season he’ll have a couple more options.  His first option wasn’t there, he could have panicked and threw the ball.  He didn’t, he kept the ball, he ran it and he scored a touchdown.  The little things, if he gets good at those, and we’ve talked about that this summer, ‘you do the little things, the big things are going to happen’.”

Whisner and ADM will see their first regular season action of the season this Friday night at home against Dallas Center-Grimes.  We’ll have coverage starting at 7 o’clock on 107.9 FM, KKRF.
