There was a wild finish in Friday night’s high school football game in Jefferson. After barely gaining any yards and being held off the scoreboard for the first three quarters, the Shenandoah Mustangs erupted for 19 points in the fourth quarters and scored the game winning touchdown with 15 seconds to play in Jefferson on Friday night. The Mustangs’ 19-15 victory lifted them to a 2-1 record and 1-0 in Class 2A District 8 while Greene County fell to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the district.

The game winning play was a 67-yard pass from Jackson Baker to Sam Kroepel after Kroepel ran past the Greene County secondary. The Mustangs went 90 yards in just 53 seconds to pull out the victory. The Mustangs were faced with fourth down and 12 with 42 seconds to go from their 10-yard line when Jackson, the quarterback, scrambled for 12 yards and a first down. The Rams were also hit with a 15-yard personal foul face mask penalty that moved the balll the 37. Following an incompletion, Jackson and Kroepel hooked up for the game winner.

Greene County led 7-0 from the second quarter on after the Rams put together a 17-play, 97-yard drive resulting in a TD pass of 20 yards from Daric Whipple to T.J. Lint. Nick Schroeder kicked the extra point. The Rams thought they kicked a 24-yard field goal in the third quarter, but a holding penalty wiped the points off the board. A 37-yard FG try on the next play was blocked and the score remained 7-0.

Shenandoah took a 12-7 lead on a pair of short touchdown runs by Jose Rendon of two and one yards. The first extra point try was a kick ruled no good, and the second try was a running play that came up short. The Mustangs were up by five points with 4:20 to play when the Rams went on a 59-yard scoring drive in nine plays. Greene County led 15-12 with 1:08 to play when Whipple ran three yards into the end zone for the TD and Jeremy Scheuermann ran for the conversion points.

Greene County goes to Red Oak on Sept. 20. The Tigers are 1-0 in the district and 1-2 overall and winning over OA-BCIG in Ida Grove on Friday night by a 20-7 score. Coverage on KG98 starts at 6 p.m. with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
