To better serve the City of Jefferson, the police department conducts night time security checks for businesses.

According the police records, there were six unlocked businesses or vehicles on commercial properties on Thursday.

Police Chief Dave Morlan says the one on-duty night time officer has a list of businesses to conduct security checks to make sure there isn’t criminal mischief every night.  Each officer works a 12-hour shift from 6am-6pm and 6pm-6am and the night time officer is also responsible to checking each of the city’s six parks.

There is also an overlap officer that is a supervisor who covers parts of the two shifts that can help to make business security checks.

Chief Morlan states that if an officer discovers an unlocked door to a business, that officer will notify the business owner and more times than not, a worker forgot to lock the door at night.  He notes that this kind of service allows for better protection for the City of Jefferson.
