practical farmersBeginning and aspiring farmers have only a few days left to apply for the Practical Farmers of Iowa’s 2014-2015 Savings Incentive Program.

The two year program pairs beginning and aspiring farmers with experienced mentors and gives participants the chance to save money and receive matching funds.

Farm Viability Coordinator Mark Strobbe says mentors are assigned based on what the new farmers want to work on to help meet all participant’s needs.

Enrollees are also encouraged to save up to $100 per month throughout the two year program.  Once the program requirements are complete, participants will earn a dollar-for-dollar match on money saved up to $2,400.  That $4,800 total will then be used toward purchasing a farm asset.

The program is open to beginning farmers, which PFI defines as someone who has owned the farm for 5 years or less, and this year they opened it up to future farmers as well.
