October 1st marked the official beginning of flu season, and Guthrie County Public Health has already been administering flu shots all week.

Nurse Administrator Lisa Chiodo advises all local residents to get flu immunizations in order to stay healthy through the winter months, but there are individuals who need the shot in particular.

“Definitely people that are around children a lot–teachers and daycare providers.  It’s (flu shot) a great way to have the immunity for yourself and also for your kids and daycare kids that you are taking of.  Then also anybody who has a chronic health condition really should be looking into getting a flu shot.  If you have concerns, you’re welcome to call our office or your primary care doctor and talk through those things.”

Chiodo says Public Health ultimately wants people to feel comfortable with getting the flu shot and to understand why the health community is so proactive in promoting their necessity this time of year.

Local residents have been inquiring to Public Health about quadrivalent injectable flu shots, which provide an additional immunity to another type of virus that can stem from the flu.  Chiodo says the agency is currently on a waiting list for these quadrivalents but do not have any available at this time.

Anyone with questions about getting a flu immunization shot should contact Public Health at 641-747-3972.
