Guthrie County’s new Emergency Notification System stood up to another severe weather challenge last week.

Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf says the new CodeRED system sent out 378 phone calls, 124 texts and 126 emails in just under five minutes during the severe thunderstorm warning in parts of Guthrie County late Thursday night.

Monica Cateron is a resident at Diamondhead Lake in Guthrie County, and she has been signed up to receive the alerts for the past couple of months.  Cateron says the system has been important for her because she’s located in a rural area away from nearby towns.

“There is no weather warning where I live, I can’t hear any.  A lot of times we’ll lose power and so we lose the TV and the ability to watch the weather on TV.  So it’s just really worked out well–it’s a really good solution for people who don’t live in bigger cities or towns with more reliable power.  I have a house without a basement so if bad weather’s coming, I definitely want to know about it.”

Kempf reminds people that the notification system works according to a resident’s 911 address.  If you live in a town that isn’t directly in the warning area, you won’t receive a call or text.

As always, anyone with questions about the new system can contact Kempf at 641-332-3030.
