South Hamilton (Jewell) spoiled Greene County’s bid for a 5-0 record at home in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Tuesday night after overcoming losing the first two sets of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference match. That was the final home match of the season for the Rams, and it was also Parent’s Night. Chelsi Wilkens is the only senior on the Greene County team and she played in front of the home crowd for the final time.

The Rams won the first set 25-23 after leading 11-1. Set two saw Greene County pull away from a 6-6 tie to win 25-13, but it was all Hawks after that. Set three was tied 11-11 before SH won 25-16. Set four was tied 15-15, but the road team dominated down the stretch again to win 25-18, and set five saw SH lead 5-0 and go on to win 15-8.

The Hawks improved to 11-14 overall in matches, 4-4 in the HOIAC, and 29-36 in sets. The Rams fell to 13-12 overall, and they finish the conference slate at 5-4. Overall in sets, Greene County is 36-37. Next up for the Rams is a trip to Johnston on Oct. 19 for the Johnston tournament, a primarily Class 5A event.
