stuart cityThe Interstate Chevrolet car dealership in Stuart donated hundreds of dollars worth of food to the Stuart Cottage Pantry last week.

As food banks across the country struggle during the government shutdown, dealership business manager Deb Johnston says the donation was made to simply help out the local community.

“Food banks are in need, it’s picking up–the people in need of the food–and it was a way for Interstate Chevrolet to help our local people, and… the community supports us, we’re a part of the community and so it (was) a way that we could give back.”

Pantry director Marlis Beeler says the large food donation came at a time the pantry was in critical need, and they’re grateful for the support

“It was greatly appreciated.  We got a lot of things that we needed desperately, and got it all put away.  We’ll be anxiously awaiting to give it all out.”

This week is actually recognized as National Food Bank Week, and Beeler hopes it will result in more food donations coming in not only to Stuart, but to food banks and pantries across Iowa.

“I think all food banks need to be patted on the back.  There is such a need, and it’s hard to believe that there is such a need in a small community like West Central Valley, but our numbers are up, our requests for food are up, and we’re doing the best we can to get things accomplished.  We’re gonna have to cut back on some items, but not many.”
