Perry High SchoolPublic school funding for the 2014-2015 academic year is based on how many students were in the seats on October 1st.  Though it takes two additional weeks for the Department of Education to make sure no students are counted in more than one district.

“Every student has a student ID, so as you put your students into the system the state obviously looks to see if the same student shows up in two different districts.  And sometimes it can because believe it or not sometimes we’ll have kids in seats October 1st and in another district on the second, but October 1st is the count day so it can get interesting at times” says Ubben.

That’s Perry Schools Superintendent Lynn Ubben.  She says their enrollment is down around 40 students this year, but it’s something they were prepared for.

“We knew this was coming and we already made some of our cuts with the across the board cuts and the board made some tough decisions at that time.  Thankfully, we were able to do that because that helps you weather the storm.  So we should be fine this year but we look to keep watching things and being a little more conservative because you don’t know how your numbers will be from year-to-year but we should be fine for a few years” adds Ubben.

Ubben says if the numbers keep dropping for several years they will have to reevaluate for budget reasons but for now she’s confident the district will be okay for the time being.
