The opposition should be familiar when Greene County hosts North Polk (Alleman) at Linduska Field in Jefferson on Wednesday night in the opening round of Class 2A football playoff competition. The 7 p.m. meeting on Oct. 30 will mark the fourth time the teams have meet on the football field in the last year. The Comets have wins in the previous three meetings including 27-13 on Sept. 6 in Jefferson. They also won in the regular season and first round of the postseason in 2012.

Both teams are playing well as they enter the postseason and both have won their last four games. The Comets are 8-1 overall and ranked seventh in 2A. Their only loss was in week five to West Marshall (State Center), who was ranked as high as number two, depending on the poll. NP, WM, and Gilbert all ended District 7 with 5-1 records and since the losses were to each other, the 13-point differential was used to break the tie. Gilbert was first, WM second, and the Comets third, which is why they are traveling to Jefferson. Greene County was second in District 8 at 4-2 and the Rams are 5-4 overall. Undefeated and number one ranked Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) won the District 8 title. The first and second place teams in each district are the host teams in round one. Wednesday’s playoff game will be the first at home for the Rams since 2006.

Coverage Wednesday night begins on KG98 at 6 p.m. with kickoff at 7 p.m.
