A Bayard man was killed in a car accident on Highway 141 in the northwest portion of Guthrie County yesterday evening after crashing head-on into a pickup truck heading in the opposite direction.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 23 year-old Jacob Cody Stringer of Bayard, was westbound on Highway 141 west of Bayard at around 5:30pm, when his 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass hit the north guard rail, veered across the centerline and hit an eastbound 1997 Ford F-150 pickup.

The two vehicles came to rest blocking the bridge at mile marker 103 west of Bayard.

Accident reports show Stringer, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

The opposing driver, 60 year-old Laverne Joseph Tigges of Adel, had to be extricated from his pickup and flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines by Mercy Air 1.  Hospital officials tell Raccoon Valley Radio Tigges is currently in fair but stable condition.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Guthrie County and Carroll County Sheriff’s Offices, along with the Coon Rapids Police Department and Fire and Rescue units, Bayard Fire and Rescue, Panora Ambulance and Carroll County Ambulance.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol and the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Department.  Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
