halloween1Kids of all ages will be going door-to-door this evening trick-or-treating and while it’s a fun event that many look forward to, it’s also important to keep safety a priority.

Perry Police Chief Dan Brickner recommends kids travel with in groups and stay in familiar areas.

“Younger kids should always be accompanied by an adult.  Older kids can go with friends of course, but they should never go alone and they should never go into people’s houses, particularly those they don’t know.  Also, kids should never approach a vehicle unless accompanied by an adult and they should always stay in well lighted areas” says Brickner.

He adds that wise costume choices can also help keep safe.

“They should wear bright reflective costumes or use reflective tape and also use flashlights.  We also recommend that they use face paint because masks reduce visibility and therefore are not as safe.  And other general rules are stay on sidewalks,  cross only at intersections and never cross between parked cars in the middle of the block.”

Brickner also encourages parents to inspect candy before their children eat it and says kids should only consume treats that are factory sealed.
