A Perry man was killed, and four others injured in a single vehicle accident in South Dakota this week.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, 56 year-old Miguel Ruedas of Perry lost control of a 2001 Ford Econoline van on the ice covered U.S. Highway 212 west of Watertown just before 7am Tuesday.

The van entered the north ditch and rolled.  Miguel and two of his four passengers were wearing their seatbelts and remained in the vehicle.  The other two were not and were thrown out of the van during the crash.

All five occupants, Ruedas, 19 year-old Miguel Ruedas Jr of Perry, 37 year-old Guillermo Bonilla-Perez of Perry, and 42 year-old Juan Antonio Flores of Perry and 60 year-old Julio Alberto Vasquez of Des Moines were taken to a Watertown hospital.

Flores, one of the passengers not wearing his seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the hospital.  The other four adults received serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
