ADMADM’s cross country season has officially come to a close following the state meet performances of Josh Berger and Brianna Mueller this past Saturday in Fort Dodge.

Berger finished 89th out of 128 competing runners in the boys’ Class 3-A 5k, while Mueller placed 68th out of 121 runners in the girls’ Class 3-A 4k.

While both runners weren’t all that pleased with their middle-of-the-pack performances according to head coach David Zwank, he’s still proud of the way they competed.

“I think they went out and worked hard.  They pushed themselves through the course of the race.  In terms of a critical standpoint, I think maybe they went out a little bit too hard actually.  When we look at their splits in terms of their miles and their overall times,” Zwank says.

Berger finished his 5k in 17:46, while Mueller ran the girls’ 4k in 16:24.

Zwank says he chalks up there slightly slower than normal times to the adrenalin and inexperience that comes with running in the state’s biggest meet for the first time.  Regardless of how they feel personally about their performances though, Zwank just wants them to build off their experiences moving forward.

“For Brianna, she’s got a chance to come back in the future and learn off of that.  Josh actually the same thing as far as coming up in the spring with track and he’s (also) talked about going and running at the college level too.  They can use these experiences to grow and get a little better, but I was certainly proud to have them representing us and the school.  I thought they did pretty well,” Zwank says.
