A new era of girls’ basketball at Greene County High School begins today with the start of practice for the 2013-14 season. The Rams have a number of players back from the 11-11 team of a season ago, but graduating last spring was the program’s all-time leading scorer Jennifer Kennedy, who also topped the 1,000 point mark for her career. Kennedy led the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference in scoring last season at 17.4 points per game and she was sixth in the league in rebounds per game a season ago at 7.3.

Head coach Chad Morton does have players capable of scoring, but for the most part, they haven’t had to be the leading scorer because Kennedy was always on the court. Not so this year, so other players such as junior Kayla Mobley (9.9 pts., 5.7 rebounds), will likely be counted on more heavily. Mobley was second on the team in 2012-13 in both scoring and rebounding. Senior Thea Ballard, along with  juniors Emily Christensen, Stacy Mears, Hannah Onken, Tressa Rasmussen, and Jolee Wessling have also logged a lot of varsity minutes in their careers. Seniors Abby Bravard and Allie Stoline, and junior Marissa Promes also had several varsity appearances last season, and they could be newcomers moving up as well.

The Rams open the season in Jefferson at the middle school gym on Tuesday, Nov. 26 by hosting conference opponent Saydel. Again this season Ram girls and boys’ basketball play-by-play can be heard on KG98. Doug Rieder begins his 35th season calling Ram basketball games.
