Practice for the 2013-14 Greene County High School girls’ basketball season is underway and the coaching staff has more players to keep track of than in recent seasons. Head coach Chad Morton reports 32 girls in grades 9-12 are out for the sport. Around 60% of those out are freshmen and sophomores.

The Rams have more sets of eyes to help in practice with three paid coaches and three volunteer staff members. There is also a greater number of women coaching the sport. Coach Morton’s assistant is Katie Gravert, who is also the JV coach. Former East Greene standout player Cassie Bardole is the freshman coach. Volunteer coaches include Mary Pedersen, Dale Smith, and Keith Vander Wilt.

Quite a bit of varsity experience returns for the varsity Rams after the 2012-13 team went 11-11. The junior class is large in numbers and some of those girls will be in their third season of varsity basketball. The senior class is lighter in numbers, but s0me varsity experience also returns from that class.

The official season opener for the varsity Rams is Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the middle school gym in Jefferson vs. Saydel (Des Moines) in a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference contest. That game will be broadcast on KG98 at approximately 7:30 p.m.
