The Greene County high school and middle school wrestlers are practicing this season in a privately owned facility one block south of the south side of the square in Jefferson known as The Fieldhouse. High school practices began on Monday while middle schoolers open practice for the 2013-14 season today.

Head coach Mark Sawhill was asked what this facility offers that the high school practice room did not. “More room, so hopefully, less injuries, less people banging into each other, so that will be helpful. Going from one full mat to two full mats is going to make a big difference I think as far as what we can do. It should allow us to open up and go ahead and finish moves instead of running into a wall or into somebody else. Hopefully, it should help us out quite a bit.”

The Rams return a number of starters from the 19-5 team of a season ago that won both the dual meet and tournament titles in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Filling all 14 weight classes could be a challenge however, as injuries and ineligibilities may have an effect on the lineup.

Greene County opens the 2013-14 season on Tuesday, Dec. 3 in Ogden against the Bulldogs and the combined Van Meter/Earlham program.
