jefferson welcomeThe Jefferson Fire Department is applying for a Federal Emergency Management Agency Assistance grant to make upgrades to its equipment.

Fire Chief Randy Love says their biggest need for why they are applying for the grant is to make an upgrade to their air packs.

“The air packs are a constant need and its for our life-safety as far as going in there and making sure everyone is out of the house, so its important to us.  And it is quite an expensive project, I think the total is a little over $150,000.”

He notes that part of the grant requires is a 10% match, which Love points out comes from both the fire department’s and the City’s budgets.  The fire department is applying for 24 air packs for the grant and Love adds that another requirement, which stopped them from applying last year, is the age of the equipment.

He comments that other equipment that was purchased through the federal grant is their air compressor and 12 of their 26 air packs were also purchased with FEMA grant money.

Love says the packs are still operational, but are outdated.

All grant applications must be submitted before the middle of December.
