Greene County SheriffMore details have been released about an accident that Raccoon Valley Radio reported from yesterday outside of Grand Junction in Greene County.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says he, the Grand Junction Fire Department and the Grand Junction Fire and Rescue Unit were dispatched to a one vehicle accident on the railroad overpass bridge just east of Grand Junction just before 1pm on Thursday.

According to his report, Sheriff Haupert says Barbra Meyer of Ames was traveling eastbound on Highway 30 when icy conditions on the bridge caused her to lose control of her 2006 Toyota Corolla and hit the guardrail.

He states that the fire department and first responders provided traffic control with caution: slow signs posted at both ends of the overpass.

“They stayed a considerable distance back away from the bridge and kind of controlled traffic because we had to close down one lane for a few minutes until we got the vehicle moved.  They do a great job of helping us do that.”

After 30 minutes, both lanes of traffic were open again and Haupert notes that Meyer wasn’t injured in the accident, but her Toyota sustained $7,500 in damages to the passenger side.

Haupert adds that since bridges are more exposed to harsh weather elements, they tend to freeze up faster than grounded roads, so he asks everyone to pay better attention to road conditions and drive a safe and controllable speed.
