West Central Valley WildcatWest Central Valley High School has been highlighting positive student behavior as part of its Random Acts of Kindness initiative all year, but they’ve placed some additional emphasis on the initiative this week.

First block classes have been bringing in canned goods to be donated to the Stuart Cottage Pantry next Tuesday, and the class with the most canned goods will win a free breakfast.

At-Risk Counselor Meghan King says the free breakfast incentive is a simple reminder for students to be respectful of one another and others in the local community.

“I mean we have such wonderful students and staff here in the district, but every now and then we always need to remember just to be kind to one another.  A smile can go a long way to people or saying hi to somebody in the hallway.  (We) try to remember all those things especially around the holidays because sometimes things can get stressful or frustrating and things like that.”

King says select students have been recognized throughout the school year for “doing the little things” that help to provide assistance or service to local residents, such as a student helping a teacher away from school grounds.

“One of our students just pulled an elementary teacher out of the ditch when it snowed that first day.  To him it was no big deal… he went home and got his chains out of the goodness of his heart, and he pulled her right out of the ditch and helped her.  To her, it was a huge thing, but to him it was like, ‘of course I would stop’.”

Acts like that are what King says make her so proud to be part of the West Central Valley School District and to be piloting the Random Acts of Kindness program. She says students will continue to be randomly honored the rest of the year for going above and beyond what they’re asked of in the community.
