The favored teams were winners in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball in the middle school gym in Jefferson on Friday night. Greene County won 52-44 in girls’ action while CMB (Baxter) won 64-46 in the boys’ game. Both contests were heard on KG98.

The Rams improved to 4-1 on the season and in HOIAC play and 4-o at home with the girls’ victory. Kayla Mobley had 16 points with 10 off the bench by Stacy Mears and nine for Hannah Onken. Greene County led 20-11 after one quarter, 34-26 at intermission, and 40-36 at the end of the third quarter. The Rams held a 51-40 lead with 1:40 to play. Six-foot senior Abby Haupert of CMB led all scorers with 22 points. The Raiders fell to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

CMB led 9-0 on the strength of a trio of three-point goals to start the game and never looked back as they picked up a third straight win to improve to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the HOIAC. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s Rams fell to 1-3 overall and in the conference. The Raiders were up 17-10 after one quarter, 37-20 at the half and 48-31 after three quarters. They led by as many as 22 points. Four Raiders scored in double figures led by Seth Balke with 20 points. Greene County had nine players score two or more points, but no one reached double figures. Mitchell Gorsuch had eight, all in the fourth quarter. Riah Nelsen had eight, all in the third quarter, and Trey Tucker also scored eight points.

Class 4A fourth ranked Perry visits the middle school gym on Saturday afternoon for JV/varsity girls’ basketball. The varsity game will be broadcast around 2:30 p.m. on KG98.
