The girls’ basketball team from Greene County High School picked up its first road win of the season when they won in Jewell vs. South Hamilton, 60-52 in action heard on KG98. Coach Chad Morton’s Rams improved to 5-2 overall and remain tied for first place in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference at 5-1. SH fell to 1-5 overall and in the conference.

The Hawks entered the game shooting around 25% from the floor, but they made their first four shots and led 9-0 just 1:53 into the game. The Rams went the first 2:30 of the opening quarter with no points, but battled back for a 15-15 tie after one stanza. Gr. Co. led 33-29 at halftime and 46-33 at the end of the third quarter. SH climbed to within 48-44 with 5:04 to play, but the Rams pushed the lead back to 11 with 1:43 left. SH entered the contest averaging just 25 points per game while the Rams averaged over 47 per contest.

Greene County had a balanced scoring attack with 13 points from Hannah Onken, all in the first half, followed by 10 from Emily Christensen. Kayla Mobley had nine points and Jolee Wessling scored eight. Kaitlin Fisher had 11 points in the fourth quarter for SH and she finished the game with 15.

Fouls and turnovers plagued both squads as SH had 31 turnovers and was whistled for 22 fouls. Greene County had 26 turnovers and 21 fouls. The Rams were 19 of 34 from the free throw line while the Hawks were nine of 18.

The Greene County girls and boys play on Dec. 20 in Nevada to end the 2013 portion of the schedule. Coverage on KG98 begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys to follow.
