Through the first one-third of the girls’ basketball race in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, four teams are tied atop the league standings with 5-1 records. Two of those teams, Greene County, and Class 3A sixth ranked Nevada, meet in Nevada at 6 p.m. on KG98 on Friday night in the last game before the break for the holidays. One of those teams will suffer a second conference loss and third loss overall as both the Rams and Cubs will enter the game with 5-2 overall records.

North Polk (Alleman), ranked 12th in 3A, and Gilbert, are the other two teams tied for first. PCM (Monroe) is just one game back at 4-2 and the Mustangs own a 54-25 victory over the Rams in Monroe on Dec. 6.

Greene County will be playing their second straight game on the road and just their third game away from Jefferson this season. The Cubs feature a number of players who were prominent members of the Nevada volleyball team that played in the State tournament in Cedar Rapids last month. It’s been some time since a Rams team has a victory over a top 10 rated basketball team and Friday night’s game will be a challenge for Coach Chad Morton’s team.

Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on KG98 and the boys’ game will follow the girls’ contest.
