ADMAt 4-2 on the season and 3-0 in conference play, the ADM girls basketball team has positioned itself nicely in the race for a Raccoon River Conference title.

Head coach Brett Watson isn’t looking that far ahead quite yet, but he says last Friday’s win over Ballard was a “huge win” for his club, and it leaves his players with a positive taste in their mouth to enjoy over Christmas break.

“We are getting better each and every game so that’s nice to see.  Looking at it, we did not play our A+ or A game (on Friday), so to beat a team not playing our best shows that we do have a lot of room for improvement and our ceiling is even higher that where we’re playing at right now.”

The Tigers actually trailed a majority of Friday’s contest against the Bombers, and didn’t take their first lead of the night until 5:19 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Coach Watson explains what he feels ultimately put his club over the top.

“It was our defense and our free throws down the stretch which is amazing for us to say… we actually made some free throws which we hadn’t been doing.  We were able to hold them to just six points in the fourth quarter, and to do something like that to the number three team in the state was just huge for us.”

Watson credits his girls’ resilience and willingness to work through their free throw struggles as the reasons behind their improvement in that department.  Entering the Ballard game, the Tigers were shooting 43% from the line as a team, but they shot 60% (12-20) from the charity stripe Friday, and that improvement over their season average ultimately earned them the win.
