It’s break time for the Greene County High School wrestling team. There’s open mat time today and tomorrow, followed by regular practice beginning on Dec. 30. Coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams are 6-7 in dual meets, 1-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, and they placed second in their only invitational tournament. That was the Dec. 21 Tiger-Knight tournament at Carroll High School.

Of the four champions, freshman Logan Scheuermann was the biggest surprise, only because he had no varsity experience. Scheuermann was filling in for senior Dylan Forkner, who is ranked fifth at 126 lbs. in Class 2A. Forkner was nursing an injury, but is expected back in the lineup when the season resumes. All Scheuermann did was win the first two varsity matches of his varsity career by fall and take the 126 lbs. individual title. He told Raccoon Valley Radio, “I don’t have much varsity experience, but I do have some experience with other varsity guys. I wrestle the Challens (Jacob and Jordan) and Forkner in practice.” Jacob and Jordan are both 14-1 on the season and Forkner has two losses, both to Class 1A number two Kyler Kiner of Ogden, a three-time state place winner.

The next action for Greene County is a Jan. 9 HOIAC double-dual in Jewell vs. South Hamilton and North Polk (Alleman).
