The Greene County wrestling team has an especially long break for the holidays. The Rams were second in the Dec. 21 Tiger-Knight Invitational in Carroll and won’t compete again until Jan. 9. Greene County opens the 2014 portion of the schedule that night in Jewell vs. South Hamilton and North Polk (Alleman). The Rams are 6-7 in dual meets including a 1-0 mark in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

Assistant coach Chris Conner said the coaches have certain goals in mind for the wrestlers with the practices over break. “We want them back after Christmas wanting to work hard and to keep in shape. They’ve been away for a week or more and by the time we take the mat on January 9 we want them to be in the same type of conditioning they were in before we left off. During break we can pick it up and go a little harder as far as live matches in the room and live “go’s” with the kids to help keep that conditioning up.” The coach added most of the varsity wrestlers will have 20 or more matches to wrestle from Jan. 9 through the end of the regular season on Feb. 1, which is an average of one match every day, making conditioning very important.
