basketball thru hoopThe ADM girls basketball team had another win in hand against a Class 4-A ranked foe last Friday, but the Tigers faltered late against DC-G and lost for the first time in four games.

At 4-3 on the season, head coach Brett Watson knows he has a good basketball team, and he feels they are just a couple plays away from taking that next step to being great.

“Like I said at the end of the game against DC-G, we’re close, but it’s not hand grenades and horseshoes so we’ve got to get better.  Like I keep saying over and over again and what I keep stressing to the girls is it’s just those little things.  We’ve got to do those little things if we want to get better and win those games against those ranked teams.  We’ve done it a few times, but we’ve got to be consistent with it and bring it each and every night to have a chance to win.”

The Tigers will have the opportunity to do more of those little things right tonight against another ranked team in the form of the Perry Jayettes.

In ADM’s fourth-quarter stumble Friday, it was the Tigers’ inability to take care of the basketball that let them down.  Tonight, Coach Watson believes it’s his team’s hounding defense that will need to remain tough for 32 minutes in order for ADM to pull off the road upset over the No. 5 Jayettes.

“You look at their offensive output… they’ve got the leading scorer in 4-A, another girl averaging about 12, another girl averaging almost in double-figures.  We’re going to have to try to slow them down a little bit because they love to push in transition and they love to score, score, score.  And once they get rolling on offense, their defense picks up so we’ve got to do a good job of sprinting back, getting ready to play some defense and keep a focus on their stud players.”

A win tonight would move the Tigers to 4-0 in Raccoon River Conference play and keep them in a tie atop the standings with Bondurant-Farrar.  A loss would move them back into a three-way tie with Ballard and Perry for second place.

Pregame coverage of ADM’s varsity doubleheader against rival Perry tonight begins at 5:45 on K107.
