The Greene County wrestling team just missed handing Saydel (Des Moines) its first Heart of Iowa Activities Conference dual meet loss of the season and the Rams had to settle for a split of their make up double-dual meet in Jefferson on Monday night. Greene County started the evening with a 57-10 victory over CMB (Maxwell) and Saydel followed that up by beating the Raiders 74-6. In the final dual meet of the night, Saydel won 39-34. Greene County trailed 36-31 with two matches left, at 132 and 138 lbs. All four remaining wrestlers were state tournament veterans and the teams split the two matches. At 132, Saydel’s 10th ranked Austin Moen nipped the Rams’ seventh ranked Jordan Challen, 4-3. Moen is now 13-5 while Challen fell to 21-3. The victory at 132 clinched the meet for the Eagles. In the  last match of the night, Tommy Bradshaw of Greene County improved to 23-1 with a 15-11 victory over Grant Sherman of Saydel, who fell to 16-3.

Jake Challen, Dylan Forkner, Abe Yoder, Bradshaw, Tray Binkley, and Rene’ Guzman each went 2-0 on the night. There were a number of forfeits during the course of the evening, but Coach Mark Sawhill’s team went 13-5 vs. the Raiders and Eagles in the matches that were actually wrestled.

Greene County goes to Nevada on Thursday, Jan. 16 for a double-dual to be broadcast on KG98 with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m. The Rams and host Cubs square off at 6 p.m. with Greene County and Woodward-Granger to follow.
