wrestlingADM wrestler Zach Johnston remained “hot,” as head coach Justin Schmauss likes to say, with his win at 152 pounds in the Ed Winger Classic at Urbandale High School on Saturday.

The win was the third consecutive weekend tournament victory for Johnston, who now finds himself ranked as the No. 6 wrestler in Class 2-A.  Despite his recent victories though, Coach Schmauss says Johnston isn’t satisfied, and he believes there are big things to come for the young sophomore.

“I’m very happy with how he’s wrestling and I know he is pleased, but we’re not satisfied right now; he’s not satisfied right now.  His goal is to go down to the state tournament and be on the top of the podium, so we’re just going to keep working towards that and make sure we’re doing the best that we possible can.”

Schmauss says Johnston’s success is a result of the extra effort and hard work he put in this offseason and during his training over the past couple months of the actual season.  For Coach Schmauss, Johnston has an attribute you can’t teach that stands out: toughness.

“The kid’s got it, he’s mentally tough… he knows how to practice hard, he knows how to work hard and stay after it and have the right attitude.  He’s relentless when he’s on the mat which is huge.  Attitude can win you a lot of matches and the kid is just tough.”

Johnston and the rest of his Tigers wrestling teammates are in action again this evening.  ADM takes on Perry and Boone in a Raccoon River Conference triangle dual meet.
