The Nevada teams both won Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball games in Jefferson vs. Greene County on Friday night in two games heard on KG98. The Cubs, ranked fifth among Class 3A girls’ teams, were 57-22 winners, while the Nevada boys’ team won 58-50. Nevada is now 14-3 on the girls’ season and 14-1 in the conference while the Greene County girls fall to 9-8 overall and 8-7 in the league. The Nevada boys improved to 4-11 overall and 4-10 in the league while the Rams fell to 5-10 overall and 4-9 in conference play.

The Nevada girls blocked 12 Greene County shots, eight by sophomore Kati Cassabaum, who also had 12 points. Jessica Helton had 12 to lead the Cubs in scoring. Greene County’s girls had a season low in points and Kayla Mobley led the team with 10 points.

The boys’ teams traded leads most of the night with Nevada up 30-24 late in the first half. The Rams’ last two points of the half were a pair of Riah Nelsen free throws with 0:00 remaining to close the gap to 30-26. Greene County started the second half with a scoring run of 11 straight points and built a 47-39 lead with 2:00 to play in the third. From that point on, the Rams were out scored 20-3. Greene County made one of 15 shots in the fourth quarter including going zero for 10 on three- point shots.

Coach Jeramie Hinote’s team is in Panora vs. non-conference opponent Panorama at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday. KG98 will have the varsity boys’ game on the air. Action begins at 3 p.m. with two quarters of ninth grade boys’ action, followed by a full JV game.
