The high school wrestling regular season has come to an end for the Greene County Rams. Head coach Mark Sawhill, the assistant coaches, and wrestlers are now preparing for the postseason, which begins on Saturday, Feb. 8. The Rams will join the Perry Blue Jays, East Sac County (Lake View), Harlan, Kuemper Catholic (Carroll), and West Central Valley (Stuart) at Perry High School for a Class 2A Sectional that begins at 12 p.m. The top two finishers in each weight class advance to the Feb. 15 District in Atlantic at 12 p.m. First and second place district finishers move on to the Feb. 20-22 State tournament in Des Moines. The first and second place teams at the Perry Sectional will advance to the team dual meet regional tournament on Feb. 11 at a site to be announced.

Greene County has had trouble coming close to filling all 14 weight classes this season, as have several teams, so many of the weight classes on Saturday are expected to have less than six competitors in them. Last week the Rams had just nine wrestlers compete, and if that is again the case on Saturday, eight of the nine expected in the lineup with have winning records.

Senior Dylan Forkner is 34-3 and is ranked seventh in 2A at 126 lbs. Sophomore Tommy Bradshaw is 36-2 and rated eighth at 138. Senior Jeremy Scheuermann at 152 placed eighth at 145 lbs. last Feb. at the State tournament and he is 38-3. Brothers Jacob and Jordan Challen also have had outstanding seasons. Jake, a senior, is 33-5 at 120 lbs. and Jordan, a junior, is 33-5 at 132. Jordan was a State qualifier a season ago. Junior Abe Yoder has gone up two weight classes to 145 lbs. since November and he owns a 24-12 mark. Senior Rene’ Guzman wrestles at 285 and is 21-19 in just his second season in the sport. Sophomore Daric Whipple, the Rams’ football quarterback, had knee surgery in November, and has just five varsity matches under his belt this season at 160 lbs., but he has a 4-1 record.
