Both Greene County basketball teams had tough shooting nights on the home floor as the Gilbert Tigers swept a Heart of Iowa Activities Conference twin bill in Jefferson as heard on KG98. Gilbert won 52-38 in the girls’ game and 68-48 in the boys’ contest. The Tigers improved to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in the girls’ conference while the Rams fell to 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the league. The Gilbert boys handed the Rams a fifth straight loss as Greene County fell to 5-12 on the season and 4-11 in the conference. The Tigers improved to 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the HOIAC.

Greene County’s girls scored the first seven points of the game before Gilbert scored the last 16 of the quarter and the Rams were never able to get close after that. Paige Hoiberg and Taylor Broshar each scored 15 points for Gilbert. Kayla Mobley had seven for Greene County.

The Greene County boys led 9-4, but Gilbert ended the first quarter on a 14-0 run and the Tigers were never seriously challenged. They led 41-20 at halftime and were up 66-30 late in the third quarter. With a running clock and mostly reserves playing down the stretch the Rams trimmed 16 points of the Tigers’ lead. Wes Greder had 20 points for Gilbert and Trey Tucker scored 14 for the Rams.

Greene County travels to the new North Polk high school building in Alleman Friday night for action on KG98. The coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.
