Trevor Kittelson’s Perry Blue Jays surprised the field by winning its sectional wrestling tournament on Saturday in the Perry Pavilion. The Blue Jays nipped Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) 205.5-204 with Harlan a close third at 202 points. Greene County had 187 for fourth with West Central Valley at 62 and East Sac County 41. The Blue Jays and Knights advance to dual meet regional competition on Feb. 11 at sites to be announced.
The Blue Jays had seven qualifiers for the Feb. 15 district in Atlantic at 12 p.m. Four were champions and three were runners-up. Perry’s champions were Kade VanKirk (113), Giasveri Niyibizi (120), Seth Stetzel (152), and Joe Olvera (285). Finishing second were Ivan Garcia (126), Jacob Thompson (138), and Kaleb Carstarphen (160).
Greene County also had four sectional champions and three runners-up for seven total district qualifiers. Advancing as sectional champions for the Rams are Dylan Forkner (126), Jordan Challen (132), Tommy Bradshaw (138), and Tray Binkley (182). Runners-up for the Rams were Jacob Challen (120), Jeremy Scheuermann (152), and Rene’ Guzman (285).
West Central Valley’s only district qualifier was 170 lbs. champion Gabe Wagner.
Kuemper Catholic had the most district qualifiers (8), but just two were champions. Harlan had three first place finishers and two runners-up. ESC did not have any district qualifiers.
