Jefferson Fire DepartmentA small shed was destroyed with no injuries reported following a fire southeast of Jefferson yesterday.

Greene County Sheriff Steve Haupert says at 5:51pm on Thursday, Danny Coleman of 1789 Quaker Avenue was burning trash when high winds caught some of the tall grass on fire from the burning embers.

Haupert states that when the Jefferson Fire Department and the sheriff’s office arrived on scene, the fire had spread to an abandoned chicken coop structure.  After 30 minutes, the flames were put out and the structure was determined to be a total loss with no injuries involved.

Haupert reminds everyone that if you are going to be burning trash in rural parts of the county, to be aware of high winds and monitor the fire at all times.  He also suggests putting a barrier around the fire to help prevent it from spreading and catching anything else on fire.
