Greene County RamsThe Greene County High School jazz choir, “Jazzatonics” competed for a third straight year at the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships this week at Ballard High School.

Director David Heupel says they finished in eighth place out of nine schools in Class 3A.  Even though he was a little disappointed with the results, Heupel points out that this year’s competition was tougher than it has been and he’s still proud to have been selected for their third straight year.

Last year, the group finished in fourth place out of eight qualifying schools.  In order to the nominated for IVJC, Heupel says a tape must be submitted of your performance and based off the critiques from the judges, you either make it or not.

During last weekend’s Iowa High School Music Association’s State Solo and Ensemble contest, Heupel notes that there were seven I-ratings given to four soloists and three ensembles.  The soloists were Michael Kennedy, Kenna Marquardt, Logan Hoyt and Noah Eberle.

Other area schools in Class 3A included Adel-Desoto-Minburn with a ninth place finish and last year’s champion, Dallas Center-Grimes received third place.
