The high school baseball and softball seasons for 2014 begin for the Greene County Rams in Jefferson tomorrow night. Coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams face the Saydel Eagles on KG98 around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in both the season and Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opener. Saydel has a traditionally good baseball program and the Rams will send junior Riah Nelsen, unbeaten in 2013, to the mound to try for a rare win over the Eagles.

Coach Tom Kennedy’s softball Rams also host Saydel on Tuesday night. The softball Rams were 26-10 a season ago and have earned a share of first place each of the past two seasons. Second team all-state catcher Marissa Promes has been the number two pitcher in recent seasons behind 2013 graduate Jennifer Kennedy, a first team all-state selection last summer. Promes now becomes the number one pitcher, but she’ll still get behind the plate when not on the pitching rubber. Saydel just missed claiming a share of the league title last summer and softball has been the Eagle’s strongest female sport year in and year out.

Both Greene County teams also host conference games on Wednesday when the Roland-Story teams visit Jefferson. KG98 will broadcast the varsity softball game on Wednesday night around 7:30 p.m.
