It had been more than 3 years since Perry had scored a run against North Polk. The Bluejays pushed across five last night in their season opening win 5-2 against the two time defending state runner-up. The Bluejays scored five runs off three hits while North Polk missed opportunities stranding 9 runners on base. The bottom of the order was the difference offensively with the trio of Cavan Finn, Michael Pentico and Zach Roberts reaching base 6 times in 9 plate appearances. Finn walked three times and scored a pair of runs, while Pentico added a single and walk with 2 runs and Roberts executed a perfect suicide squeeze for a hit and later added a critical sacrifice bunt that eventually plated a pair of runs. The Perry offense took advantage of 7 North Polk free passes. Finn picked up the win on mound, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Junior Will Whiton was sensational out of the bullpen striking out 9 of the 11 batters he faced to pick up his first save of the season. Whiton inherited a bases loaded jam in the 4th inning and struck out Russell Greene after falling behind 3-0.
Perry will travel to Norwalk tonight for a 7:30 non conference matchup against the Warriors.
