The Greene County baseball team takes a complete game pitching streak of five games into tonight’s Heart of Iowa Activities Conference contest in Jewell vs. South Hamilton. The Rams are 2-3 overall and have the same record in the conference. Coach Mark Sawhill’s pitchers have gone the distance in all five games and senior Wes Tipton takes the hill tonight vs. the Hawks. Not once has a relief pitcher been called on in the 33 innings Ram pitchers have thrown this season. Juniors Colton Fitpatrick and Riah Nelsen each have a pair of complete games and Tipton has one. Not only have they thrown complete games, they’ve thrown well with none of the five Greene County opponents getting much done offensively. The Rams have allowed four, two, four, zero, and two runs in the first five games, and several of those runs are unearned.

Coach Sawhill told Raccoon Valley Radio in his 12 seasons as head coach, he’s not previously had a pitching staff start the season with this kind of complete game streak. “It’s a real credit to Colton, Riah, and Wes, to be able to keep the pitch count down and be in good enough shape early in the season to complete every game they’ve started. We hope we can keep it going.”

The Rams played three games in the first week of the season and tonight’s game is the third this week. A pair of games in Cherokee tomorrow vs. the host team and OABCIG (Ida Grove) could make it a real challenge to continue the streak. The two Saturday tournament games will be the first non-conference contests this season and those games will be the first on the varsity level this season that Fitzpatrick, Nelsen, or Tipton have not been on the mound.
