Low Voter Turnout in Dallas County’s Primary Election

Less than eleven percent of registered voters in Dallas County cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primary election.

Out of the 4,875 votes, only 500 of the ballots came from Democrats, likely due to the fact that the party had no contested races in the primary.

As a comparison, roughly 11.8 percent of voters turned out to the polls in last November’s city election, 7.8 percent of Perry voters cast a ballot in September’s school board election and around 10 percent of Dallas County’s registered voters went to the polls for the special election last August.

In the highly contested races, Dallas County mirrored the statewide results with Joni Ernst winning the Republican nomination race for U.S. Senate, followed by Sam Clovis and Mark Jacobs.

The majority of Dallas County voters also Brad Zaun to win the Republican nomination for U.S. House District 3, though Matt Schultz came in second place locally, followed by David Young where districtwide results show Robert Cramer behind Zaun, then followed by Schultz.

Since no candidates in the race were able to get the necessary 35 percent of votes to win the nomination outright… the Republican candidate will be decided in convention on June 21st in Creston.

Drop Off Used and Unneeded Tires Today in Perry

As you’re spring cleaning that garage or shed and find some old tires that you don’t need… you’re invited to dispose of them during the City of Perry’s annual tire collection event Saturday.

City Administrator Butch Niebuhr encourages all area residents to take advantage of this opportunity.  He says in addition to getting rid of clutter, tires can pose a health concern because they are often breading grounds for mosquitoes.

Residents can drop off up to five car tires free of charge at the Perry Recycling Center between 9am and noon Saturday.

Additional tires can be disposed of for $1 each, while large truck and tractor tires will be charged $5 each.

All tires must be removed from rims before being dropped off and the event is for residential use only.

Perry Dog Park to Celebrate 3rd Anniversary

Hard to believe the Perry Dog Park has been around for three years now, but this weekend we’ll celebrate the milestone.

Saturday the Perry Humane Society and Perry Area Chamber of Commerce invite everyone to come check out the dog park between 11am and 2pm.

Join the Raccoon Valley Radio “Big Red Radio” as we broadcast live from the event.

There will be adoptable pets available from area shelters, a microchip clinic, make and take dog toys, a “Wags to Riches” dog salon, raffle and door prizes and a hot dog lunch.

The event is free and you don’t need a membership to the dog park to participate.

Drought Conditions Remain the Same Despite Wet Week

June is off to a pretty wet start here in the Raccoon River Valley area.

According to the National Weather Service, Perry received 1.86 inches of rain this week.  Guthrie Center received 1.61 inches and Jefferson had 1.36 inches since June 1st.

Normal monthly rainfall totals for the local area range between 4.99 and 5.16 inches in June.

There’s no major change in the latest drought monitor from the National Climatic Data Center though, as conditions continue to range from normal or moderate drought in Dallas, Greene and Guthrie Counties.

Use the Raccoon River Valley Trail for Free Next Weekend

You’ve heard us mention that this weekend all Iowans can fish for free Friday and Saturday… well in addition to the Free Fishing Weekend event at the Glissman Conservation Area Sunday the 8th, residents are also invited to take part in another free event next weekend.

The Dallas County Conservation Board is participating in Free Trail Weekend on the Raccoon River Valley Trail.

“You do not have to have a trail pass that weekend.  So come check out the trail.  You don’t have to be on a bike, you can just walk or take your rollerblades, or your skateboard out, or take the dog out as long as it’s on a leach and just go out and enjoy that trial that way.”

That’s museum curator Pete Malmberg who says these events are a great time to check out the many amenities in Dallas County.
