perry signPerry has received more than five inches of rain since Friday, which is a lot of water for any town to handle but City Administrator Butch Niebuhr says things went pretty well.

Six or seven years ago, Niebuhr says a lot of homeowners would have been storing the water in their basements.

“So I realize that some people still did have water in their basements but in general I would say it wasn’t because of our sewer system.  The sewer system seemed to handle it.  We had some grease that got loose in one section of town and then we had a supercharged area down between 16th and 18th (Street) by Warford and Lucinda that we always have trouble with when we get into that three and four inch rain.  But we have some property owners down there that are prepared for it and know about it and they’re kind of their own worst enemy with sub pumps and different things that happen there” says Niebuhr.

Plus, the City crews didn’t have to worry about solving the issues themselves.

“Our contract that we did not too long ago with AccuJet here in Perry worked well.  AccuJet offered to help us get the sanitary and storm sewers cleaned up right away, so that worked out real well.  I know some people are having problems with ground water coming out, it looks like the water table is backed up again and people who have water in their basements that are coming through the foundations re still going to have that problem while sub pumps are going.  But overall looking back seven or eight years ago, the town and the system handled it a lot better.”

The Perry area typically sees just under 4.5 inches of rain throughout the month of July, we’ve already registered around 1.2 inches.
