illegal fireworksAs we celebrate our Independence Day on Friday, several fireworks will be used throughout our country.

Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan says the state allowable fireworks, without a permit, are snakes, sparklers and caps.  If you are found lighting any other kind of firework, you can face a $250-$400 fine and be charged with a simple misdemeanor.  If you cause property damage or bodily harm, you can face a criminal charge and higher fines.

He states that his department receives about one-to-two calls per week about people lighting illegal fireworks.

If you want to ignite other fireworks than the allowable ones by the state, then Morlan suggests you obtain a fireworks permit through the Greene County Board of Supervisors.

County Auditor Jane Heun says you have to fill out an application form and get the Supervisors approval.  She adds that it doesn’t cost any money to get a fireworks permit.
