fireworksIndependence Day is a holiday that is often celebrated with family, friends, barbecues and outdoor activities before being capped off with explosions in the sky.

District 10 State Senator Jake Chapman of Adel is one of many people in Dallas County who have permission to legally set off fireworks this weekend, after his application was approved Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors.

As you may remember, Senator Chapman spent a lot of effort on a bill this past session that would legalize the use of fireworks in Iowa.  Ultimately, the bill was unable to pass despite bi-partisan support, but Chapman says residents haven’t forgotten and many still want to be able to celebrate such occasions with fireworks.

Iowa is one of only 8 states in the county where fireworks are illegal and Chapman encourages anyone who has an opinion on the issue to make it heard.

“What I would encourage folks to do is as their celebrating their independence, if they want the same freedom as most of America has in being able to celebrate Independence day by setting off fireworks, that they contact their legislators and tell them ‘It’s time we modernize our fireworks law and do so responsibly, regulate them safety and allow Iowans the freedom to enjoy those fireworks” says Chapman.

Chapman adds that safety is always the primary concern and he encourages everyone to have a responsible, safe and festive 4th of July.
