spring_lakeThe recent amount of rainfall in Greene County has pushed the monthly total for June over eight inches.

The National Weather Service reports that Jefferson has received 8.03-inches of precipitation which is well above the average of 4.99-inches for June.

With the almost double amount of usual precipitation, that has prompted Spring Lake near Grand Junction to return to a normal water level.

County Conservation Director Dan Towers says even though Spring Lake is full again, it’s still a fairly shallow body of water.

“You’re lucky to find eight-foot of water in the lake.  I guess the average of the entire lake is more like four-to-five-feet.  So even when it’s at crest elevation, you’re lucky to find seven or eight-foot of water.”

He points out that since there is no watershed or creek to feeds into the lake, it is solely dependent upon rainfall.

Last year, Towers comments that the lake was this full after the Memorial Day rainfall, but the summer-long drought brought the water level back down.

He’s hoping that there isn’t a drought this summer to keep Spring Lake full of water.
