160_poleroad_color_Aug25_0521PMComing up this weekend, the White Pole Road Development Corporation will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its namesake being the first registered state route by the newly-formed Iowa State Highway Commission on July 30th, 1914.

Liz Gilman, a board member and co-founder of the development group, says her organization will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of White Pole Road, formerly known as Great White Way Highway, at Stuart City Hall this Saturday from 6 to 8pm.  She hopes area residents will stop by to check out some of the history behind the 26-mile stretch encompassing the Cities of Adair, Casey, Menlo, Stuart and Dexter.

“When you reach the 100-year mark, we felt we had to do something.  We’re going to be handing out some free anniversary cake and lemonade outside of City Hall, and we’re doing it in conjunction with Stuart’s Scoop the Loop night since we’d already have a lot of people enjoying the cruise around the city… we wanted to also invite the other four town that are part of White Pole Road to come on over to Stuart to Scoop the Loop with everybody.”

Gilman says an official from the Iowa DOT will also be present for Saturday’s 100-year anniversary.
