Monday’s second marketing plan meeting established specific demographics that Greene County wants to attract people to live in the community.

Economic Development Director Ken Paxton says the core demographic group that they will be marketing to are people ages 50-65 that are middle to upper level income financial base and people who are more about the experience and less about shopping.

Based on the current research and observation, Paxton explains that this demographic is already visiting the community and they want to enhance that group of people.

“So one of the things you always learn in marketing is the best way to grow your market is to grow your current customer base.  They’re easier to attract and to get more out of than going out and looking for new customers.  So, if we’re already attracting these kinds people, why not try to go out and attract more of them.”

He points out where Iowa’s tourism is coming from and knowing how to cut down their demographic to fit that parameter.

“We don’t draw from New York and California.  We need to face that and realize that our tourism patterns are very, very regional.  All those states that surround Iowa are where the people are coming from to visit Iowa, as well as Iowans themselves staying home.”

Paxton comments that they identified secondary groups of people to market to as well which also fits to what Wild Rose Entertainment mostly markets to which are people 50 and older.  However, one area they would like focus on are the infrequent casino patrons who are looking for other experiences outside of a casino.

Now that they have their core demographic established, Paxton states that they will have another meeting on August 19th at 6pm at the Sierra Community Theatre to create their selling messages or what they want to include to attract people ages 50-65 before choosing which communication channels to give that message out.
