Jefferson Fire Department

A log fire is believed to have started a steel shed on fire in Jefferson early this morning.

Just after midnight, the Jefferson Fire Department, the Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to a steel shed fire at 1119 J Avenue.

Sheriff Steve Haupert says when a deputy arrived on scene, the 36-by-38-foot steel structure was fully engulfed in flames.  After about 90-minutes, the roof of the structure had collapsed and fire personnel extinguished the flames to prevent any further damage from spreading.

Fire Chief Randy Love comments that since the fire wasn’t any bigger when they got there, they didn’t have to call for extra assistance from another department.

Haupert points out that the owner, Lynn Hardin, believes the fire may have been caused by a log fire that he had started the previous day and may not have completely put it out.

Love says no one was injured in the incident and the building is said to be a total loss with several snowmobiles and tools included.
