A Jefferson girl wins a field event at the State Hershey Track Meet in Marshalltown.

Ten year-old Olivia Shannon was one of four Greene County competitors at last month’s State Hershey Track Meet in Marshalltown.  Out of 24 competitors from all across Iowa, Shannon won the standing long jump in the girls 9-10 year-old division with a jump of six-feet-and-seven-inches.

However, she wasn’t selected as one of nine representatives from Iowa to compete at the National Hershey Track Meet in Hershey, Pennsylvania at the end of this month.

Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says after this year, Hershey will no longer sponsor a national track meet.  She talks what the parks and rec department will do going forward and what might happen at the state level.

“The Iowa Parks and Recreation, they’re looking into possibly doing like a state meet and if they can’t get that organized, we will still do our mini track and then we will end with a track meet so everybody will be able to participate that wants to; they just won’t qualify to go on to anything.”

There were 58 participants at this year’s local Hershey track meet in April.

Shannon’s other events were the 200-meter dash in which she placed 12th and the 400-meter dash which she finished tenth.  Other competitors from Jefferson included Morgan Farnham with a 20th place finish in the 100-meter dash for 11-12 year-old girls, Logan Woodruff finished 25th in the 200-meters and 15th in the 400-meter dash in the 9-10 year-old boys and Nathan Wailes competed in the 100-meter dash for the 11-12 year-old boys and he finished in 20th place.
